Being a fairy-tale heroine is lonely, because no one gets your shit.”
Red, Take Back the Hood
Take Back the Hood is an acerbic, dry, faux-confessional stand-up in which Red (yes, that’s right, the REAL Little Red Riding Hood) explores, takes back and liberates her “story”. In a world of victim blaming, ACC’s mental injury proving, slutwalks and Twilight, how has Red been able to cope? Well, she’s made a show, that’s how.
Armed with a keyboard, a microphone and metaphor Red stirs thought, pokes fun and even hits you in the feels at points. “ACC said that I had to prove I had a mental injury in order to qualify for more therapy. When they asked me about my mental injury, I told them, ‘when I was eight I got stalked by a wolf who kidnapped my grandmother and while impersonating her had me strip and get into bed with him, he assaulted me, he was killed, my family hid the body and they coped by having a picnic’. ACC said they didn’t have a box to tick for that.”
Take Back the Hood is a one-woman show inspired by performance art, poetry, Red Mole, Split Britches, Ana Mendieta and the legitimate Todd Akin.
The piece was originally staged as a Toi Whakaari Go Solo project in 2012 and is the only Go Solo to be performed in this year’s Fringe Festival.
Produced by Phoebe Smith.
Creative mentorship by Jo Randerson.
